Climate Specialist (Consultant
Duration: Individual Consultancy
Reports to: Head of Programmes and Strategic Partnerships
Location: Kingston, Jamaica (with potential for regional and international travel)
Position Summary:
The Climate Specialist will play a pivotal role in supporting the design and implementation of climate-related programming under the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship – Caribbean’s (BCoEC) initiatives. Working closely with the Programme Development Specialist and the Head of Programmes, the Climate Specialist will bring deep knowledge of sustainability, climate resilience, and environmental entrepreneurship. This role will focus on advising and guiding entrepreneurs in climate-focused ventures, ensuring that sustainability principles are embedded throughout the programme delivery and capacity-building initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
Climate-Focused Programme Design and Delivery:
- Collaborate with the Programme Development Specialist to create and implement climate-related training modules, workshops, and bootcamps that address clean energy, climate resilience, sustainable agriculture, and climate finance.
- Provide expert advice on sustainability best practices, ensuring climate considerations are embedded in entrepreneurship training.
- Assist in the evaluation of entrepreneurs’ business models from a sustainability perspective, offering guidance for improving climate resilience and alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Entrepreneur Support and Mentorship:
- Support the recruitment and selection process for climate-focused entrepreneurs, ensuring that programme participants have relevant climate or sustainability objectives.
- Provide one-on-one mentorship to entrepreneurs, particularly on scaling climate solutions, securing funding, and adopting sustainable business models.
- Participate in the creation and evaluation of pitch decks and business proposals with a climate adaptation and mitigation focus, assisting entrepreneurs in presenting to potential investors.
Climate and Environmental Research & Analysis:
- Stay up-to-date on climate-related policies, global trends, and technological advancements in sustainability, and apply this knowledge to improve programme content.
- Conduct market research on climate finance, renewable energy, and climate adaptation strategies to inform both entrepreneurs and programme design.
- Develop sustainability benchmarks and performance indicators to measure the environmental impact of entrepreneurs within the program.
Partnerships and Community Engagement:
- Establish and maintain relationships with environmental experts, climate change organizations, and regional sustainability initiatives to enhance program impact and entrepreneur success.
- Represent BCoEC at climate-related events, panels, and forums to advocate for climate-focused entrepreneurship and develop partnerships.
- Organize climate-specific networking events and webinars, inviting leading voices from the climate resilience and sustainable development sectors.
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting:
- Assist in monitoring the environmental performance of entrepreneurs in the climate acceleration programme, offering feedback and recommendations for improvement.
- Contribute to data collection and reporting processes to evaluate the climate impact of the program and its participants.
- Support the development of impact reports for stakeholders, highlighting the role of climate entrepreneurship in fostering economic and environmental resilience.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Climate Studies, Sustainability, or related fields.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in climate resilience, sustainability, or environmental consulting.
- Proven experience in advising startups or businesses on sustainability practices or climate solutions.
- Familiarity with climate finance, clean energy technologies, or sustainable agriculture.
- Experience working in program management, with a focus on environmental or social impact initiatives.
Direct Skills Required:
- Climate Expertise: Deep understanding of sustainability, climate change adaptation, and resilience.
- Training & Facilitation: Ability to deliver workshops and mentor entrepreneurs on climate-related business strategies.
- Project Management: Experience in managing or contributing to complex, multi-stakeholder projects.
- Research & Analysis: Capacity to conduct research on climate trends, policies, and technologies, and apply findings to program development.
- Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills for public speaking, facilitation, and reporting.
- Problem Solving: Structured approach to identifying environmental challenges and offering practical business solutions.
- Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Office, Google Apps, and environmental data software.
